AHA revises guidelines on Kawasaki disease

The revised American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines on Kawasaki disease, published in the Oct. 26, 2004, issue of Circulation, provide recommendations to guide the clinician in deciding which children to treat for Kawasaki disease. This statement is also endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and copublished in the upcoming Dec. 1, 2004, issue of Pediatrics.

Cooperation on medicines regulation intensified


The EU-FDA confidentiality arrangement was reviewed at a meeting in Brussels on 13 March 2006 of
the European Commission, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) and the US Food and Drug
Administration (FDA). The implementation plan for the arrangement was judged by all parties to have been a success.
Following positive feedback from both regulators and industry that parallel scientific advice can
facilitate the development of safe and effective medicines, it was agreed to extend the pilot phase for this process. Another area of particular benefit is pharmacovigilance, where close collaboration on a number of important issues has enhanced patient safety.

The new website is easy to navigate and visitors can get access to information on the documenting centers of the ESID online registry. Some other data is published on the website, total number of patients included in the registry database(s) and number of diagnoses from the different countries.

In progressive immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) treatment has been used to delay disease progression, but the long-term efficacy is largely unknown. We report the clinical outcomes after IVIg therapy in six male patients with progressive IgAN [median glomerular filtration rate (GFR) 31 ml/min per 1.73 m(2)] followed for a median observation period of 8 years.
